What’s the Yahoo-Bing deal means for SEO Industry ?

13 Comments »July 30th, 2009

The deal announced between Microsoft’s Bing and Yahoo! says that Yahoo! is getting out of the search business and will include Microsoft’s Bing engine into all of its services.  What’s going to change for the field of search engine optimization after this Yahoo and Bing deal ? Thus its going to make any significance changes or not. This is a big question!

Is this the start of huge changes in internet search supremacy?

The key points of the Microsoft – Yahoo Deal: From Microsoft’s press release

  • The term of the agreement is 10 years;
  • Microsoft will acquire an exclusive 10 year license to Yahoo!’s core search technologies, and Microsoft will have the ability to integrate Yahoo! search technologies into its existing Web search platforms;
  • Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Yahoo! will continue to use its technology and data in other areas of its business such as enhancing display advertising technology;
  • Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers. Self-serve advertising for both companies will be fulfilled by Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, and prices for all search ads will continue to be set by AdCenter’s automated auction process;
  • Each company will maintain its own separate display advertising business and sales force;
  • Yahoo! will innovate and “own” the user experience on Yahoo! properties, including the user experience for search, even though it will be powered by Microsoft technology;
  • Microsoft will compensate Yahoo! through a revenue sharing agreement on traffic generated on Yahoo!’s network of both owned and operated (O&O) and affiliate sites;

The agreement does not cover:

  • Web properties and products,
  • email, instant messaging,
  • display advertising,
  • or any other phase of the companies’ businesses.

As far as SEO goes, a lot of matter is still up in the air. If this deal goes through, what’s  going to happen to…

  • Yahoo! Directory (a fantastic link source)
  • Yahoo! link data (best free public source)
  • Yahoo! SearchMonkey & BOSS
  • Yahoo!’s paid inclusion

It may possible that all four of them go away.

How frightening is this? There are already rumors that Microsoft’s new Bing search engine will change the way we all have to approach SEO . Well its to early to say anything. According to yahoo it can take upto 2 years for full implementation of deal, so there is time. Thus, the best strategy is to get prepared to encash all the oppoutunity when the deal get live.

Check out the different aspects of the agreement on the new website estsblished :

A spider decides your fate on World Wide Web.

18 Comments »July 21st, 2009

Interesting , Is’nt  it! When you talk of getting your website listed at the top results of SERPs, the most important thing you should be acquainted with, is the functioning of the search engine spiders that crawl over your website.

What is a search engine spider ?

A search engine spider or crawler is a computer program that browses the World Wide Web in a systematic, automated way. Major search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing use these spiders to get the update knowledge of the sites that are on the web. This process is called Web crawling or spidering.

How search engine spiders works ?

The crawler does just what its name implies. It crawls the web following links, updating pages, and adding new pages when it comes across them. They visit URL to URL until they have visited every web site on the Internet. This is called indexing or spidering. The index is where the spider collected data is stored.

Why search engine spiders are so important ?

When someone perform a search for a particular keyword then search engine gives the result  from the index which are most relevent to the search. That’s why spiders are so important because they decide relevency and positioning of website in SERPs. That’s why if your site is not spidre friendly or not crawled by spider then chance getting to the top result of SERPs becomes shallow.

How to manage search engine spiders ?

A lot of people will think that managing the search engine spiders is not possible but its not true. Sometime it is in fact easier than you might think, what it requires is just simple techniques and tools. Having unique and relevent content is the most impotant aspect because spider gives ranking on behalf of relevancy . Duplicate content can affect your ranking. The most important tool is robots.txt file, which show the way to spider which page is important and which page has not be indexed. Using meta tags, H1/H2/H3 Tags, Alt Tag ( crawler can’t read image ), Proper Internal linking and many other methods are there by which you can make spider indexing your website at top ranking.

Overall your aim should be that the crawler visit your site in order for you to get a good rank. A good rank means lot of vistors , lot of  visitors means new potential customer, new customers means more business, more business means more money. Thats why I say a spider decides your fate on World Wide Web.

But most of the people will agree with me that having a professional website is not enough because it really doesn’t matter how magnificent your site looks or how technologically advanced you make it. You need visitors to your website before you are going to make a single penny from it. So having a website is half battle won but now the most important question arises! How to get visitors or potential customers. There are innumerable ways by which you can drive a huge traffic to your website. Let’s talk about some of them.

First of all let see from where these traffic comes from. Answer is “Search Engines”, because search engines account for roughly 80-90% of all of the visitors to most of the websites. This is really huge! Is’ it? So it’s very important that your site has been designed as per search engine standards otherwise you will never going to beat other websites alike to the subject of your website. The most successful method for this is Search Engine Optimization also known as SEO.

SEO is a process of optimizing your website in such a manner that it comes out in top results of SERPs* via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results, when a searcher is looking out for a topic relevant to your website or business. Generally, the earlier a website is found in top SERPs more the chance of getting more visitors increases. SEO for a website mainly involves editing its content, adding meta tags and validating HTML coding to increase its significance to specific keywords and getting easy for search engine spiders to index it. You can go for SEO by yourself or can hire a Professional SEO Company to do it for you. If you decide to do it by yourself then here is link where you can find some basic useful SEO tips.

Other method involves is Search Engine Marketing also known as SEM. It is a process of promoting the website by increasing their visibility in SERPs through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.
